Canadian Chiropactor magazine
would like extend its congratulations to the chiropractic clinicians
and researchers at the CMCC clinic based at St. Michael's Hospital in
Toronto. Drs. Deborah Kopanski-Giles and Igor Steiman were the DCs on
the interdisciplinary team that achieved the Innovations in
Interprofessional Teaching Award given by the University of Toronto's
Department of Family and Community Medicine Undergraduate Education
Program.
The two chiropractors were acknowledged along with their team - which also consists of physicians, pharmacists and physiotherapists - for their work in developing an innovative model of interprofessional teaching for pre-licensure health science students at St. Mike's.
The model involves an interdisciplinary faculty that teaches health sciences students and the various professions that are represented, in this model, include chiropractic, physiotherapy, pharmacy, social work and medicine. The focus is on patient-centred, collaborative practice in support of conservative management of low back pain. The program also incorporates various teaching styles and learning from experience.
The award comes on the heels of the team's previous accolades in the area of Interprofessional Education (IPE) of post-licensure (resident level) candidates.
St. Michael's Hospital is a flag-ship teaching facility affiliated with the University of Toronto. The center is making initiatives in interprofessional learning for health sciences students a priority.
