Chiropractic specialty colleges’ inaugural conference
Nov. 15, Toronto, Ont. – On Saturday, November 12, Canada’s chiropractic specialty colleges held their inaugural joint conference and trade show titled Clinical Neurology Update.

The event was held at the Delta Chelsea Hotel in Toronto and was comprised of technical presentations and panel discussions.

Representatives and members were present from the following groups:

  • The College of Chiropractic Sciences;
  • The College of Chiropractic Orthopedists;
  • The Chiropractic College of Radiologists;
  • The Chiropractic College of Rehabilitation Sciences;
  • The Canadian Federation of Chiropractic Regulatory and Educational Accrediting Boards.

The proceedings began with a welcoming message from Conference Chair, Dr. John Crawford and continued with platform presentations by Drs. Joe Lemire, John Crawford and Rocco Guerreiro that explored diagnosis, differentiation and management approaches for various pain syndromes that commonly present to the chiropractic clinic.

Next, topics centered on the conservative management and rehabilitation of pain were presented. The morning ended in a Grand Rounds that consisted of case studies tackled by a panel of specialists from the various colleges whose mandate it was to integrate the approaches presented throughout the morning to explore a challenging selection of pain management scenarios.

A luncheon was held in the exhibitors’ area, thereby allowing the delegates to interface with companies that offer products and services for the chiropractic profession.

Following the luncheon were presentations that introduced the finer details of very specialized techniques available to chiropractors, namely electromyography and musculoskeletal sonography.

The final session of the day was a presentation by Drs. Eldon Tunks (MD, FRCP(C)) and Howard Vernon regarding the interdisciplinary management of chronic pain.  This session included a discussion of the epidemiological evidence for addressing comorbidities and techniques that chiropractors can utilize to deal with comorbidities and illness behaviour.  The presentation included new research on chronic whiplash patients.

A dinner buffet was followed by AGMs held by the colleges in attendance.

Organizers of this inaugural conference look forward to organizing next year’s event.  Please stay tuned in the months to come for details, dates and program information.
