Dr. Mike Reid

Dr. Roger Turner, DC speaks with Dr. Mike Reid, CEO and Head Coach of Chiropractic Masters, about Dr. Reid's discovery of
chiropractic; how he,
himself, became a member of this profession; and how he further
established himself as a prominent Canadian chiropractic coach.

“At 15 years of age, I experienced chest pains. After six months of searching, no one could figure out what was causing them. I decided to try visiting a chiropractor. In two minutes, he found subluxations in my neck and ribs. With chiropractic adjustments, the chest pains disappeared. Additionally, the colds, flus and allergies I’d always suffered from ceased to bother me and my athletic ability improved. What an incredible and riveting introduction to chiropractic this was.”

Dr. Mike Reid, CEO and Head Coach of Chiropractic Masters, talks to Canadian Chiropractor about his discovery of chiropractic, some years ago. He then goes on to tell us about how he, himself, became a member of this profession and how he further established himself as a prominent Canadian chiropractic coach.

“At CMCC I visited many chiropractors such as Dr. Paul Listro and Dr. Dave McLachlan. I attended some lectures and helped at screenings. I learned the business of attracting new patients in fourth year from a master on the outside, Dr. John Whitney – this allowed me to be successful, right from the start.”

“I’ve trained with Tony Robbins for 10 years. The question he always teaches is, “Why not you?” Why can’t it be you, having the success, creating the abundance, building the legacy and teaching your wisdom to others?’”

“I have two coaches that keep inspiring and pushing me, because you can never know it all. Once a month, we explore new possibilities, which help to propel me to greater heights.”

“Even Tiger Woods has a coach to keep him motivated.  A coach provides new insights and suggestions. Having a coach means being accountable when the coach says, ‘Did you do this?’”

Sharing the secret
“When I started practising,” says Reid, “I wanted to see 300 people a week and make $30,000.00. Then I started shadowing other chiropractors who were seeing higher volumes, and making more money than I was. I realized I was thinking too small.  I realized, ‘If these other guys can do it, I can do it too.’ We changed our goal to 1,000 patients a week; and we reached it. We had a record day where we saw 344 patients.”

“Some feel they can’t see more people and have a self-limiting belief that was ingrained in them during school or early childhood. If someone says, “You can’t do it,” do a one eighty, because, believe me, you can.  Hang around people who are positive, optimistic and models of success.”

“We had doctors coming to our practice asking, ‘How do you do this?’  We decided to do our first seminar in my office and we had 12 people. I just shared my secrets. The next one, in Toronto, we had 50. We have helped many of our clients who never thought they’d see more than 200 patients in a week get to 700.”

“I’ve always had this vision to share my success with other doctors, of making chiropractic number one in health care. We have the best-kept secret and everyone deserves access to it.”

And, what is that secret?
“The key is to have a principle behind what you do,” notes Reid, “to have purpose, passion and a strong mindset. You’ve got to have a can-do and will-do attitude. You have to be willing to work hard, especially at meeting and greeting people. That’s the foundation to building a practice. From there, you add the coaching and develop the procedures.”

“Why is one doctor building a big practice and another one isn’t? It’s because they are meeting people. They have an underlying belief in what they can do. They have a focus on serving people and saving lives. The rest is simple, as the procedures are easy to implement.”
“I stay healthy by practising a few daily morning rituals:

  • Wake up at 5:15 a.m., mentally and physically focused.
  • Meditate for 15 minutes.
  • Eat an energizing and nutritious breakfast.
  • Do one hour of aerobics/cross training with a personal trainer.
  • Reading for 15 minutes daily.”

“My motivation comes from having a purpose in life.  I was inspired, by Dr. Gilles LaMarche, to have a personal life-mission and business vision. Both of these are in front of me every day. I have a vision board for the things that I want to do in life.

“We all want the big house, the cars and the vacations.  But we really have to change who we are first; that’s the be that comes before the do. It’s having a vision or purpose and being accountable. A coach can inspire you to get up in the morning, to do the things necessary to move forward. If others can do it, then why can’t I?  That always spurs me on. That’s what keeps me hungry on a daily basis.”

“I never hang around negativity, negative people, or negative news. I don’t watch any TV other than The Discovery Channel with my kids.  I’m always focused on relationships and self-improvement.”

“My wife and I put family first. Family nights are Tuesdays and Fridays, as well as weekends at the cottage. Dr. Lise and I are in the clinic for a total of eight half-days. Wednesday mornings and Fridays are dedicated to coaching. We then have nine seminars throughout the year.”
“We have great support teams for the coaching and the practice. We delegate a lot, which allows us to keep balance.”

What about young chiropractors?
“My biggest concern for the new grads is their ignorance of what’s happening in chiropractic. They call saying, ‘I’m in trouble, five years in practice, still struggling, I need help.’ That is the most common complaint.”

“Here are the key things I tell them:

  1. Philosophy. The pain-based model is just not working because we’re seeing a lot of pain based with PVA of 10. Increase the doctor’s certainty, faith, and confidence in what they deliver. As doctors, we need adjustments once a week. If we need that, why shouldn’t our patients get adjusted on some sort of wellness care program? People need chiropractic for the rest of their lives.

  2. Business skills. Establish a fee for service, know how to set up a practice, market it, attract people, educate them and get them under care.

  3. Great adjusting skills.  Soft tissue techniques are not adjusting.  We are chiropractors. This means ‘healing with the hands.’ It’s not healing by massage or by modality. Make sure you’re adjusting.

  4. “Some grads don’t have the philosophy or understand Innate Intelligence. They are pain-based and disconnected from what chiropractic is. The greater the ‘disconnect’, the more likely a practice is to fail.  Once we establish this re-connection, a practice just takes off.

“They get the big idea – the old chiropractic philosophy is resurging today:

  • The body that made itself can heal itself.
  • Chiropractors detect and correct the misalignments allowing the body to facilitate the healing process.
  • Once they are adjusting, and getting the ego out of the way, the body heals itself.”

“It’s critical that the schools take a look at the graduates who are scared to adjust the necks, to recommend long-term chiropractic, and who don’t have the philosophy. I love showing them the possibilities.”

“The things we emphasize to develop a strong foundation for growth are:

  • Changing the thinking of the doctor, including their management style and belief system. We teach them to have a positive belief in who they are and what they’re delivering.
  • Stripping down their fears and mapping out a life plan.
  • How to Run a Practice. Day 1, Day 2 procedures.
  • Team building.
  • New patient attraction and marketing strategies.
  • How to run the practice like a business.
  • Better communication and personal empowerment skills.”

Some final thoughts and future goals
“It has taken us eight years,” says Dr. Reid, “to hone in on what is critical for growth and as soon as the doctors put this into play they really excel.”

“We have a different practice model, which is wellness based, long term, corrective, subluxation, family and business oriented.”

“We’re instituting a number of new projects for the future:

  • ‘Chiropractors Without Borders,’ mission trips to help spread chiropractic around the world. These will be C.I.D.A. and W.H.O. approved
  • Scotia Line of Credit for patients and doctors. Patients that need money for care can get it.
  • Corporate Wellness Programs and working as Wellness Consultants. We’re working with Steve Rallis from Healthscore.
  • New Software using facial recognition and touch screens. It’s designed to run the practice like a business so that doctors can do automatic recalls and reminders.
  • Research Clinical Science Program. Collecting information, on lifestyle changes, which shows the benefits of chiropractic.”

“It’s up to us to show them the bigger picture,” concludes Reid.

“BJ said, ‘Once you get the big picture, all else follows.’”
