Oct. 2, 2014 – A retired doctor from Prince Edward Island says the provincial government isn't doing nearly enough to attract physicians who specialize in inflammatory arthritis.

Doctor Des Colohan shared his concerns yesterday with the legislature's standing committee on health in Charlottetown.

Colohan told the committee he's been involved in physician recruitment on P-E-I for 16 years.

But he criticized the government's approach to recruitment, calling it passive and ineffective.

Colohan
says there is a growing number of Islanders diagnosed with inflammatory
arthritis, but there is only one specialist in the province.

That means some patients must travel outside of the province for treatment.

The P-E-I Arthritis Society says it's also concerned over the lack of a second specialist.
